What Happens After Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding normally leaves a mixture of woodchip and soil where the stump stood. This can be allowed to settle, removed or used to help fill the hole depending on the customer’s plans. Ground levels may drop as the material decomposes, so additional topsoil may later be needed before turfing or planting.

Choosing the finish you need

The intended use of the ground matters as much as the stump’s size. A shallow grind may be suitable where the area will be levelled and grassed, while construction, paving or replacement planting can need a different depth or full excavation. Roots extending away from the stump may remain and should be considered before later groundworks.

  • Tell the contractor whether the area will become lawn, planting, paving or a structure.
  • Mark known cables, pipes, irrigation and other underground services before work.
  • Expect some roots to remain beyond the ground stump unless full excavation is specified.

Access, services and settlement

Stump machinery needs a safe route and enough working space. Measure gates and identify steps, walls, pipes, cables and irrigation before the visit. Grindings are a mixture of wood and soil and can settle as they decompose. Agree whether they will remain, be removed or be replaced with topsoil as part of the quotation.
